“Take up your cross and follow me” is Jesus standard for discipleship. We are too prone to think that grace and mercy requires nothing of us, that salvation is a free gift that we can just add to our sins
and have it both ways: justified in our sins, we need not change our lives. But the cost of discipling under Jesus Christ is this: His life for ours. An exchange, that taken seriously, means we turn from evil and idols to embrace the grace. Discipleship requires hard decisions and a life of daily resistance of evil and efforts at Christ-like living. It involves our will and our choices, and hence, the call ‘to count to cost’ before you begin.
