The temptation of Jesus in the desert for 40 days reveals much to us. We learn that our true character is revealed in how we behave when nobody is looking. But another test of our true character is how we behave when sudden calamity falls upon us, such as the earthquake in Haiti. Sudden calamity deprives us of the time to put on an act, and aspects of our real selves are revealed. Fasting and prayer are ways that we can practice the discipline of ‘loss’ and deprivation, so that we might be prepared to stand, and not to fail, when the ultimate tests of live come upon us. Luke 4:1-15
