Lamentations 3. Perhaps the greatest grief there is for humans is when they lose their entire culture and way of life forever. War and disease have wiped out entire peoples, and Israel is no exception. The Babylonian captivity, with the destruction of Jerusalem and her temple, was the occasion for some of the harshest words ever directed toward God in the Bible. Yet the prophet Jeremiah did not grief and mourn civilizational destruction without also affirming Israel’s faith and hope.
