David, when he was dying, gave his son Solomon a final list of deeds to perform – they were political and called for revenge and reward. This is David entering death facing backwards, still trying to deliver a parting shot, meddling in earthy affairs. Often it is personal pain and agony that keeps us clinging to desperate last minutes moves to fix things.
